Abstract

The study of historical heritage not only functions as an effort to preserve culture, but also as a window to understand the social and political dynamics that underlie the emergence and changes in the meaning of the heritage. This article examines how artifacts, historical sites, and documents from the past reflect changes in the social structure and political constellation of a society. Through a historical approach and contextual analysis, this study highlights the transformation of the function of historical heritage - from a symbol of royal power, a medium for legitimizing colonial power, to a tool for constructing national identity after independence. Case studies of several historical heritages in Indonesia show that the interpretation of historical heritage is dynamic and influenced by socio-political interests that develop over time. The results of this study emphasize the importance of reinterpreting historical heritage in supporting collective awareness and the formation of an inclusive national narrative.
