In multilingual societies, religious discourse is often a site where speakers blend codes to project both spiritual authority and social accessibility. In Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State in North-Central Nigeria, a city shaped by Islamic tradition and Yoruba heritage, clerics who deliver Jummah sermons routinely mix Arabic, the sacred language of Islam, with Yoruba, the language of everyday life. Although Yoruba-English code-mixing has attracted considerable scholarly attention in Nigeria, Yoruba-Arabic mixing in religious sermons remains largely unexamined, despite Ilorin’s standing as a centre of Islamic scholarship. This study addresses that gap by investigating the patterns and pragmatic functions of Yoruba-Arabic code-mixing in Jummah sermons in Ilorin. Adopting a qualitative design, the study draws on 15 audio-recorded sermons purposively sampled from mosques across the city, complemented by semi-structured interviews with 5 clerics and 5 congregants. Data were transcribed, coded, and analysed within a combined sociolinguistic and pragmatic framework. Findings reveal four recurrent patterns of code-mixing (inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential insertion, formulaic Arabic expressions, and switching for emphasis) that perform four corresponding pragmatic functions: asserting religious authority, clarifying meaning, engaging congregants emotionally, and structuring the sermon. Both clerics and congregants evaluate the practice positively, regarding it as a bridge between sacred authority and cultural intimacy. The study concludes that Yoruba-Arabic code-mixing in Ilorin sermons is a deliberate, function-driven strategy rather than an incidental habit, and recommends further research into comparable bilingual religious practices in other Nigerian speech communities.

Fatai Toyin Kareem, Lydia Damilola Oyewole, Khadijat Temitope Lawal Copyright (c) 2026 Fatai Toyin Kareem, Lydia Damilola Oyewole, Khadijat Temitope Lawal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://ejurnalunsam.id/index.php/mjpp/article/view/15301 Wed, 30 Sep 2026 00:00:00 +0000 The Influence of Parental Style on Marital Instability among Married Adults in South-West Nigeria https://ejurnalunsam.id/index.php/mjpp/article/view/15307
Marital instability is an important social and family problem in Nigeria. It is expressed through persistent disagreements, emotional distance, poor conflict resolution, separation, and divorce. Although several factors influence the quality of marital relationships, the experiences individuals acquire in their families of origin may significantly shape their behaviour as spouses and parents. This article examines the influence of parental style on marital instability among married adults in South-West Nigeria, drawing on the attached thesis, which investigated parenting styles, communication styles, and emotional intelligence as predictors of marital instability. The study adopted a descriptive survey design of the correlational type. The sample comprised 400 married adults selected across Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo States through a multistage sampling procedure. Data were collected using the Parenting Styles and Marital Instability Questionnaire (PSMIQ). The reliability coefficient of the instrument was 0.81. Data were analysed using frequency counts, percentages, and Pearson's Product-Moment Correlation at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that neglectful parenting was the most prevalent parental style among the respondents, followed by authoritarian parenting. Parenting style had a significant relationship with marital instability, r = .37, p < .001. The findings suggest that adults raised in neglectful, authoritarian, or otherwise dysfunctional family environments may experience difficulties with emotional regulation, trust, communication, and conflict resolution in marriage. The article recommends positive-parenting education, premarital counselling, marital enrichment programmes, and culturally responsive family counselling services in South-West Nigeria.
Kaothar Bukola Abdulmajeed, Jemila Yusuf, Kamoru Abidoye Tiamiyu, Abdulkareem Olalekan Abubakar Copyright (c) 2026 Kaothar Bukola Abdulmajeed, Jemila Yusuf, Kamoru Abidoye Tiamiyu, Abdulkareem Olalekan Abubakar https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://ejurnalunsam.id/index.php/mjpp/article/view/15307 Wed, 30 Sep 2026 00:00:00 +0000 A Lifelong Learning-Based Teacher Career Development Model https://ejurnalunsam.id/index.php/mjpp/article/view/15144
The purpose of this study is to provide a conceptual framework for understanding the professional development needs of pre-service teachers, with the aim of facilitating their professional development. This study identified problems with the literature research methodology, including literature review, source selection, data analysis, conceptualization and modeling. Data sources included peer-reviewed articles, academic journals, policy documents and reports from the Department of Teacher Professional Development and Lifelong Learning. The results of the study indicate that teacher professional development should not be limited to formal professional development or certification, but should be integrated into the learning process. The results of the literature synthesis revealed five main themes: pedagogy, reflection on practice, knowledge collaboration, instructional design and collaborative leadership, and collaboration between teacher professional development. The contribution of this study is to integrate lifelong learning, teacher professional development, continuing professional development, and social work organizations in interdisciplinary work, to improve teacher professional development research and to improve teacher professional development. Further research is needed to validate the model using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods to investigate effectiveness and performance at different levels and contexts of education.
Basuki Basuki, Abdul Rauf Copyright (c) 2026 Basuki Basuki, Abdul Rauf https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://ejurnalunsam.id/index.php/mjpp/article/view/15144 Wed, 30 Sep 2026 00:00:00 +0000 Management Information System Utilisation and Administrative Effectiveness in Kwara State Private Secondary Schools https://ejurnalunsam.id/index.php/mjpp/article/view/15337
The study investigated the relationship between Management Information System (MIS) utilisation and administrative effectiveness in private secondary schools in Kwara State, Nigeria. The population comprised all academic and non-academic staff, including principals, in private secondary schools in Kwara State. A sample of 357 teachers was selected from 24 purposively chosen private secondary schools using simple random sampling techniques. Data were collected using a self-designed questionnaire titled Management Information System Utilisation and Administrative Effectiveness Questionnaire (MISUAEQ). The instrument was validated, and reliability was ensured. Data analysis was conducted using mean and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the level of MIS utilisation in Kwara State private secondary schools was moderate. Similarly, administrative effectiveness was found to be moderate with task completion rate, resource management effectiveness and effective classroom management. Correlation analysis showed a significant positive relationship between overall MIS utilisation and administrative effectiveness. Significant relationships were also observed between student grading information system utilisation and administrative effectiveness, fee management system utilisation and administrative effectiveness and scheduling management system utilisation and administrative effectiveness. The study concluded that effective utilisation of management information systems enhances administrative effectiveness in private secondary schools. It was recommended that regular staff training, improved ICT infrastructure, and the adoption of centralised scheduling and online fee management systems be implemented to strengthen school administration and overall effectiveness.
Adeseko Sunday Olaifa, Kafayat Oluwatobi Balogun, Felicia Bosede Giwa, Rahmat Bukola Ahmed-Zakariyyah, Hafsat Bola Nurudeen Copyright (c) 2026 Adeseko Sunday Olaifa, Kafayat Oluwatobi Balogun, Felicia Bosede Giwa, Rahmat Bukola Ahmed-Zakariyyah, Hafsat Bola Nurudeen https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://ejurnalunsam.id/index.php/mjpp/article/view/15337 Wed, 30 Sep 2026 00:00:00 +0000
