Abstrak

Nationalism became a strength within the Gayo people to continue to survive and fight when fighting against the Dutch troops. This article aims to examine the background to the war between the Dutch government and the Gayo community in 1898-1918 and the influence of the war between the Dutch government and the Gayo community on the emergence of nationalist values and examine what nationalist values the Gayo community had in fighting against it. Dutch colonial years 1898-1918. The method used is historical research or the historical method with a library research approach. Based on the historical method, there are 4 stages that will be carried out, namely; heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. Based on the research, it was concluded that the background to the war between the Gayo people and the Dutch occurred because the Dutch wanted to control the Aceh region by controlling small areas first so that it would be easier to conquer Aceh as a whole, then because the Gayo area was the last defense area of the Acehnese people, then The Dutch had the ambition to conquer the Gayo area to make their next actions easier. The influence of the emergence of the nationalist values of the Gayo community has succeeded in inflaming the spirit of the Gayo community which is very fanatical according to the Dutch. The nationalism that emerged, transformed into an act of mass resistance which made things difficult for the Dutch. The emerging nationalist values became a great motivation for Gayo fighters. The values contained in the spirit of resistance of the Gayo people in 1898-1918 were love of the homeland, cooperation, unity and willingness to sacrifice.
