Abstract
This article investigates whether Praat, an aplication for phonetic analysis, can help ESL students enhance their pronunciation ability quickly. We present the results of a research study that five ESL students used Praat to analyze phonetic stress patterns and manipulate sounds, particularly with yes/no and wh-questions. The findings indicated that Praat could help students improve their pronunciation. Students were able to detect errors that they might not have noticed somehow by obtaining immediate visual feedback. This pilot study shows that the Praat training converted to sound production, as the students performed these question forms more clearly and naturally in a successive dialog reading task. This paper demonstrates how ESL/EFL teachers and students can definitely benefit from this free and widely available open-source computer apps based on the findings of a research.
