Abstract

This study discusses how to improve early reading skills in mentally retarded children by using picture cards as media. The problem behind the implementation of this research is the lack of ability to recognize letters experienced by one of the students at SLB N 1 Painan who is already in grade IV SD. The problem that the researchers encountered was that students had memorized and were able to verbally mention the letters a-z in the order from beginning to end. Then for the shape of the letters a-z have not memorized as a whole. Researchers know that students can only memorize the shapes of the letters a, b, d, g, h, i, j, k, m, n, o, p, s, t, u, x, y, and z. As for the other letter forms, children cannot, namely the letters c, e, f, l, r, q, v and w. Based on these problems, this study aims to prove that picture card media can improve early reading skills for mild mentally retarded children. The research method used in this study is the Single Subject Research (SSR) method, the type of experimental research is in the form of A-B-A, namely, baseline (A1), intervention (B) and baseline (A2). A1 is the baseline phase or initial ability before getting treatment/intervention. B is the treatment phase or ability during the treatment/intervention. A2 is the baseline phase or observing the subject's ability to no longer be given treatment/intervention. Data collection techniques used are observation, documentation and oral tests. The results of data analysis showed that giving treatment in the intervention phase using picture card media could improve early reading skills in mild mentally retarded children. This is evidenced by an increase in initial reading ability from the baseline condition (A1) to the condition after being given a picture card media intervention.
